Nowadays a lot of innovations capture the IT world as it becomes more and more developed and all activities came across to be digital. Along with cryptocurrencies ‘boom’, online businesses growth and IoT technologies, the startup term has become a common application of modern entrepreneurs. Along with digital business activity, there are non-profitable communities that simply gather within a certain idea. Those type of non-profitable activity is called an open-source. Let`s make it more clear to understand each side benefits and drivers (stay turned to see the example of an unconventional application of open-source in the gaming industry).
A project can be called as ‘open source’ if it is free for other users in terms of its use, modifications and distribution (actually any purposes). Means, the project is public and does not bear any commercial purposes as far as it is foreseen by the open source license.
Open source is not about software only (though the primary idea was laid on this scale), It is about any digital source whether it is gambling or books collections. Today you can find a lot of them put to the google search ‘open-source projects’.

A lot of gamers know about the legendary Creatures games developed in the early 90th of XX century. After a fast growth the popularity of them has declined, but in 2004 a team of community ideological inspirers has started an open-source gaming engine on the Creatures games series. Fuzzie, Nornagon and Bdonlan, with Dylan, ElasticMuffin developers stood in the routes of creation, with further testing teams participation.
The aim was simple: to make these games possible on previously unsupported systems by extending the access to the source code. The platform was run only with the aim of usability, not a game creation itself (it can be downloaded from the official centre of games to be playable). And it worked, worked on Windows 2000, XP/Vista as well as Mac OS X and Linux. It is hardly understandable for people when they get know that the development is non-profitable and all developers do it for fun. It is actually the core of the open-source.
An idea is at first place. You see, it is a power of community. People gather around the worth project to make it real. It reminds a childhood dream, that is so true as no others are. Remember the Linux (it was also an open-source project at first, then it became one of the widely-used systems). Imagine you ask your friend to help you with a deal that contributes to the common community good, i.e. the local park clean up. Did he ask money from you? Suppose, that no. The same is with authors and contributors.
Collaboration. The worth idea brings many people from all over the world. And It is a normal practice.
A mix of use. According to the licence, the author of idea bears only the right of being a creator. Other users can use the project and edit it with own purpose as they wish until it meets the rules of a platform.
Openness. Nevertheless, of governmental interest like U.S or other strict regulating countries in terms of online activities, the transparency is highly important for contributors. They can research and improve the source on the subject of bugs and errors.
Self-improvement. It is partly referred to the previous point. People like to challenge themselves. Getting experience is sometimes much more important than material perks which still can further be reached. UI/UX design, web-design, organizing or whatever else you would like to try.
Mentors and coaches. Critically important for a freshman in the deal is mentoring. Open-source is a perfect place to find one, to learn more than at university, get new skills and build a reputation/career.
